What is customer service?
Customer service is the direct interaction between an organisation and the person it is serving: the conversation at the counter, the call, the message, the complaint and its resolution. It is the part of the customer experience where a person is present and accountable in real time.
The skills customer service actually requires
The skill list that matters is shorter and less obvious than the one usually advertised. Establishing what the person actually needs, which is frequently not what they first asked for. Giving information that is true and complete enough to decide on, in words the person in front of you understands. Holding accuracy and courtesy at the same time under time pressure. Saying no in a way that leaves the person with a route forward. Handling a complaint without either conceding what is not yours to concede or defending what is indefensible.
Note what is absent: warmth. Warmth helps and cannot be assessed reliably, and a standard that rewards it punishes competent people who are simply reserved.
What good customer service looks like when it is checked
Assessed customer service is different from admired customer service. The question is not whether an interaction felt pleasant but whether it was accurate, complete, timely and recoverable: did the customer leave with correct information, everything they needed, within a reasonable time, and with a way back if it turns out to be wrong.
ISE assesses this as an observed interaction rather than a written exam, because the ability to describe good service and the ability to deliver it are different abilities and only one of them is the job.
Customer service training that changes behaviour
Training fails when it is delivered as a one-day workshop of principles and no one is ever asked to demonstrate anything. What survives contact with a shift is practice on real interactions, honest description of ones that went badly, and a standard the person can check themselves against afterwards without a trainer present.
The ISE officer-level course is built that way: twenty-one short modules designed to be done on a phone between shifts, where nearly every exercise asks the learner to write up something that actually happened to them rather than to answer a hypothetical.

Common questions
What are the most important customer service skills?
Finding out what the customer actually needs, giving information that is true and complete enough to act on, staying accurate and courteous under time pressure, saying no while leaving a route forward, and handling complaints without over-conceding or over-defending.
How do you improve customer service?
Set a standard specific enough to be checked, make sure the process lets a competent person meet it without heroics, plan recovery for the failures that will happen anyway, and measure whether the change worked.
What is a customer service certification?
A credential confirming that the holder has been assessed against a defined standard of service delivery rather than self-declaring the skill. ISE certifies at CSEO level for people in direct customer contact.
